Near Arrowhead

January 14, 2006

Plentiful powder was waiting to be harvested, so Greg, Phil, Dave, and I headed up to the Arrowhead area near Steven's Pass to find some freshiez. After breaking trail up the road for a while, we cut up through some trees. Following a nice little clearcut, we found a short boulderfield. I was game for a lap right then and there, but the others convinced me to continue. The snow got drier and deeper; breaking trail was very difficult. We went up the ridge, and then, at Phil and Greg's urging, we started traversing over. They insisted that soon there would be an open slope with great skiing. Well, they were slightly mistaken, but we took a run down nice powder, skinned back up, and headed for the pillow line.

After ripping the pillows and the clearcut below, we decided that another lap was necessary. Another run through the pillows, and more powder turns in the clearcut. Dave jumped off a little hump and faceplanted spectacularly. Here is a very short video of said faceplant. At the bottom we decided that another run was definitely worth it. After that the pillows were a bit compacted, and it was getting late, so we skied out.

Greg and Phil returned the next day with the Hummels, went up Arrowhead, and reported the best snow of the year. Bastards.
