Middle Sister via Renfrew

July 2, 2006

It took an astounding eight hours to drive from Seattle to Eugene, OR (the drive usually take 4-5). Once there, my dad and I decided to go skiing. Middle Sister seemed like a good idea, and the Renfrew Glacier (not much of a glacier, really) looked nice. So we hiked in and camped at the base of the snow. It sprinkled a bit that night, so I was happy to have brought the tent.

The next morning we hiked (me) and skinned (Dad) up. We made a wrong turn and had to hop across a bunch of talus before descending back to the snow. The hike up the north ridge was fast, though, and the NW face was continuous. After hanging out at the summit for a while, we skied the finger of snow off the summit and went down the NW face. The snow was good corn and it even felt steep for a turn or two.

Unfortunately the Renfrew proper is quite flat, so it was primarily an exercise in straightlining. We didn't get to ski down much from camp; we were forced to shoulder the ski gear and hoof it. After momentarily getting lost at the lava flow we found the trail again and swatted mosquitos during the walk back to the car.

Camp. Me. On the summit.

Dad. Me and my tracks. Me again.
